Canon Chris Bard

Chris Bard: 1952-2007

It is with deep sadness that we announce the death of BBC Essex presenter and Faith and Ethics Producer, Chris Bard, at the age of 55.

He was taken ill whilst on a working visit to Ireland on Sunday 2nd September and died later that day.

Chris, who was a Canon within the Church of England, Vicar of Theydon Garnon and Epping Upland and Chaplain to Capel Manor College, had been broadcasting on BBC Essex since 1989.  He leaves a wife, Mary and two daughters.  We assure them of our prayers.

Tributes to Chris can be found on the BBC Essex site.

Each week Chris co-presented Sunday Breakfast on BBC Essex from 6.00 a.m. to 9.00 a.m.  The programme aimed to serve both the existing audience and drew in those who are interested in an authoritative yet entertaining voice about matters of faith.  The programme held faith up to the light, but tried do so in a way that drew in the listener whether or not they had any stated religious belief.  Chris was not afraid of poking fun at the Church, admitting the humour in many aspects of human behaviour, especially in the context of organised religion.  Throughout  his aim was to encourage, rather than put down, but was not so over-awed by religious leaders that ever failed to hold them to account.

The programme will continue on BBC Essex and we will bring details as and when things settle down and we know who will takeover Chris' work.
